A delegation of four executives of the Nigerian National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has recently visited Infoterra's Production Site in Potsdam and the TerraSAR-X Receiving Station in Neustrelitz.
During this visit, Dr. Dr. S. O. Mohammed, the NASRDAs Director General, and Infoterras Managing Director Joerg Herrmann signed a Memorandum of Understanding defining a roadmap for a close cooperation over the years to come.
Nigeria has successfully established an independent space program. Short term program objectives are the access to real-time and affordable Earth observation data, for weather forecast, resources inventory and environmental and disaster management, through either the direct purchase of imagery or the development of Earth observation satellites and associated ground receiving station. NASRDA launched its first satellite, NigeriaSat 1, into orbit in September 2003. The launch of a high resolution African Resources Management Constellation (ARMC) satellite, NigeriaSat-2, is envisaged for 2010.
Following these two optical earth observation satellites, Nigeria is now considering a radar mission. In order to thoroughly evaluate and prepare this potential mission, NASRDA has not only reverted to Infoterras SAR-Training for remote sensing experts, but plans to widely use TerraSAR-X data for preparation and evaluation purposes, and to refer to Infoterra’s expertise in SAR application, evaluation and interpretation. The definition of a corresponding roadmap has been agreed upon in the MoU which was now signed in Potsdam.
